NİL AKADEMİ TEA CEREMONY(與茶同行)
“Upon opening the door, the first seven necessities: firewood, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and tea.”開門七件事,柴米油鹽醬醋茶)
Tea is not merely a beverage—it is a vital element of life that carries profound spiritual and philosophical meaning in East Asian cultures. Across all East Asian traditions, tea represents a culture, a way of life. The Art of Tea (茶藝) is not just a technique; it is a form of “dao” (道)—a practice of “The Way.”
The character “Dao” (道) holds a deeply philosophical significance. While it originally meant “path” or “way,” over time it evolved to imply “method,” “principle,” and even a transcendent philosophical system. What is translated as Taoism in English is rooted in the Daoist (道家) philosophy, which emphasizes harmony with nature and the principle of non-action (無為 Wu Wei).
This concept of “Dao” is closely intertwined with the art of living. For example, in Japanese, we see terms like Chadō (茶道 – the way of tea), Shodō (書道 – the way of calligraphy); in Korean, Taekwondo (跆拳道 – the way of the fist and foot). All end with “-do” (道), signifying a path of practice that seeks harmony between the individual and the universe.
Initially, Chadō in Japanese simply meant “serving tea to a guest,” but over time, it evolved into an intricate ritual and a mental discipline. When we brew, serve, and drink tea, we are not just doing something—we are being with everything. The tea ceremony (茶儀式) is not merely something to be watched—it is a shared experience.
In doing so, participants are not mere spectators—they become co-creators of an artistic moment. The purpose of the tea ceremony is not just to drink tea; it is to be present in the moment and to cultivate harmony with all beings. Through this ritual, participants may gain inner peace, awareness, and balance with nature. Those who embrace the simplicity, balance, and mindfulness of “tea life” show us how to live not in resistance, but in harmony with life itself. Throughout our lives, we live to live, we walk to walk—but if we drink tea with all its fragrance, warmth, the feel of the teapot, and the elegance of the cup down to our bones… everything becomes more beautiful, effortless, and fluid.
